When going back to school after the summer holidays there are many dofferent feelings and things to think about , for girls who experienced their first period during the summer holidays, it can also bring new questions and worries. This blog offers tips and ideas to help them feel supported, prepared, comfortable and confident.
Talk openly
Periods are a normal part of growing up, and talking about them openly can help reduce embarrassment or anxiety. Encourage girls to ask questions and remind them that everyone's experience is different.
Help them feel prepared
Before school starts, make sure they know what to expect and have access to the period products they prefer. Keeping a few supplies in their school bag can also help them feel prepared if their period starts unexpectedly. - A pencil case is a good way to store pads and you can also include a clean pair of pants.
Let the know School will be supportive
Girls should know who they can speak to at school if they need help. Teachers, pastoral staff, and other trusted adults can provide reassurance and practical support when needed.
Be kind and understanding
Listening without judgement and taking their concerns seriously makes such a difference.
A Period Positive approach helps girls understand that having a period should not stop them from learning, joining in activities or enjoying school. Having access to the right information allows them to be educated and empowered.
Most importantly, remind girls that they are not alone other girls around them will be experiencing the same thing's. As with all areas of life understanding, preparation and open conversations, make everything easier.
Period Pain
Remember Period pain whilst common, it is not physiologically normal, if a girl is experiencing painful or heavy periods that require her to be off school then she needs support and help to get to the bottom of it and help to improve her menstrual health.
