Theya Period Pants & Pads

Updated: Feb 23

Early in September a friend reached out to say he would like to connect me with someone whom he felt I would have a lot in common with.

He had somehow managed to connect with another woman in Ireland who was interested in Period Pants and like me was passionate about Bamboo as a fabric.

Within a few days I had arranged to meet with Ciara Donlon Founder of Theya Health Care and we were sitting in Strandfield (my favourite place to eat)

and I was being introduced to Theya's new range of Period Pants & Reusable Menstrual Pads.

When Changing Cycles was founded in July 2020 and we purchased Moon Times from Rachel we also purchased some stock. I knew that once that was sold through we would be reviewing our product offering and how we could best move forward.

In Sept 23 I was beginning that process. Once I met Ciara and heard about her company, her passion and the research that had went into creating these products I knew they were exactly what we wanted and indeed what women deserve when it comes to their menstrual health care products.

Theya's products were exactly what I had been looking. They ticked many of the boxes that we needed ticked, Ciara's values and ethos were very much aligned with mine and with Changing Cycles as a Social Enterprise. The rest as they say is Herstory, our story, this story. I am hopeful that these first of their kind products will become part of the positive period story of many girls and women in the weeks and months and years ahead.

Introduction - Meet Ciara & Theya

Theya CEO Ciara Donlon owned a lingerie boutique in Ranelagh, Dublin, Ireland. Women who had been diagnosed with breast cancer were coming into the store, trying to find a bra that accommodated their body throughout their breast cancer journey, without compromising on quality, comfort, or style.

This included Rose , Theya Healthcare founder Ciara Donlon’s grandmother, Rose Donlon.

Rose was a breast cancer survivor and an amazing lady who inspired her grand-daughter to set a new standard for women when they need it most.

Locating a bra of this kind proved to be a far more difficult task than Ciara had imagined. Choices currently on the market were few, and comfort and style were nowhere to be found. Women were forced to wear mastectomy bras made from itchy, scratchy, downright uncomfortable material designed by male engineers, or choose from a maternity or sports bra.

Building on Theya Healthcare’s success serving women around the world, with the highest quality, softest, sustainable bamboo post surgery garments that help you heal and feel better faster, we set our sights on shaking up the period underwear market.

“One of the main aims of our new premium period products range is to make them accessible and affordable for all girls and women who need them” according to Ciara Donlon, CEO and Founder of Theya Healthcare.

What makes Theya’s premium period underwear special?

  • Produced in a medical device factory which is FDA approved to ISO standard’s 13485, 11948 and 10993.

Bamboo & Graphene

Odour Resistant

Bamboo inherently has antibacterial properties, which means it resists the growth of bacteria and fungus that can nest within fibres and cause odour over time. Some synthetic activewear is chemically treated to make it odour resistant, but these chemicals can cause allergic reactions and are especially problematic for sensitive skin (not to mention bad for the environment). Bamboo clothing resists odours naturally making it better than other materials.

Hypoallergenic

People with sensitive skin or who are prone to allergic reactions from certain types of fabrics and chemicals will find relief with organic bamboo fabric, which is naturally hypoallergenic. Bamboo does not have to be treated with chemical finishes making it safe for even the most sensitive skin types.

Thermal Regulating

Bamboo thrives in warm, humid climates. That means that the fibre of the bamboo plant is uniquely suited to help regulate body temperature. A cross-section of bamboo fibre shows that the fibres are filled with tiny gaps that increase ventilation and moisture absorption. Bamboo fabric helps keep the wearer cooler and drier in warm conditions and warmer in cooler conditions.

Moisture Wicking

Bamboo fibres are naturally moisture-wicking unlike many synthetic fabrics which need to have chemicals applied to make them so. The natural bamboo plant typically grows in hot, humid environments. It is naturally absorbent, easily soaks up moisture enabling it to grow quickly. Bamboo grass is the fastest growing plant in the world, growing up to one foot every 24 hours. This is partly due to its ability to use the moisture in the air and ground. When used in fabric, bamboo naturally wicks away moisture from the body, helping the wearer to stay cool and dry. Bamboo textile also dries very quickly.

Breathable

The micro gaps identified in bamboo fibres enhances breathability. Bamboo fabric is lightweight, as air can circulate through the fabric keeping the wearer cool, dry, and comfortable.

Benefits of Graphene

Graphene is a strong and durable material that consists of a single layer of carbon atoms. These atoms are tightly bonded by strong chemical bonds, which makes graphene 200 times stronger than steel. This material is part of one of the most abundant substances in nature, graphite (graphite can be found, for example, in the mines of our pencils). One millimeter of graphite contains three million layers of graphene!

Graphene fibre in the textile industry has gained popularity because it is claimed that thermal properties revolutionize clothing. Graphene fiber acts as a filter between the environment and the skin. It expels heat in warm surroundings but preserves the heat in cold weather by evenly distributing body heat. Graphene-enhanced fabrics naturally reinforce body temperature adjustment making fabrics comfortable and lightweight.

  • non-toxic

  • anti-bacterial - Graphene possesses natural antibacterial properties that effectively inhibit the growth of bacteria. This allows graphene fabrics to maintain cleanliness and hygiene even in damp conditions. The antibacterial and odor-resistant features of graphene make it a good choice for clothing such as underwear and socks promoting body hygiene and cleanliness.

  • hypoallergenic

  • odour-resistant

  • anti-static

The use of a combination of bamboo and graphene in Theya's period underwear ensures that all wearers can rest assured that their period underwear is highly anti-bacterial, odour neutralizing and highly absorbent.
